Keeping Seniors Safe on Halloween

As Halloween draws near, it is important to remember that while many festivities will be taking place, this holiday can bring many hazards for seniors. Whether planning to join loved ones in trick-or-treating or staying home, these Halloween safety tips will ensure that your holiday is all treats and no tricks.

Halloween decorations add to the spirit of the holiday, however, they can result in accidents. If you’re planning on decorating your home, be mindful of tripping hazards such as wires or electrical cords. Be careful not to place candle lit pumpkins on stairs or walkways: flames don’t mix well with Halloween costumes involving long capes or robes.

Sometimes, teens and young children play pranks on Halloween. To avoid being targeted, leave interior and exterior lights on, even if you won’t be home. It is also never a good idea to let trick-or-treaters into your home. If you’re worried about staying home alone, ask a friend or a loved one to hand out candy with you. If at any time you do not feel safe, call 911 immediately.

Before going trick-or-treating with loved ones, evaluate your costume to make sure that it is safe for the activity. Make sure that it is not too long to avoid dangerous falls. Make sure to wear a pair of comfortable walking shoes, and make sure someone in your group carries a backpack or a cooler with water to stay hydrated.

While walking around the neighborhood, make sure to keep a lookout for tripping hazards such as smashed pumpkins, uneven sidewalks, curbs, and wet leaves. Make sure to also use well-lit sidewalks whenever possible. It is wise to get inside before dark. Poor lighting increases risks of accidents.

Halloween is a fun holiday, but it should be celebrated cautiously to keep unwarranted frights away.
