Long Wait Times for Medicaid Applications in Nebraska

Nebraska’s public benefits call center, AccessNebraska, has received negative reviews for high rates of busy signals, long waits on hold and countless unfinished tasks. The launch of the call center in 2009 was backed by claims of streamlining the process for public benefits such Medicaid, food stamps and heating assistance which previously were held in person. Furthermore, the system was publicized as a way to save millions in taxpayer dollars.

However, the legislative oversight committee tasked with a study of the program has found that it is not meeting the needs of its clients. Moreover, much of the expected savings have been erased as state legislators try to help Health and Human Services fix the systems problems. The Performance Audit Committee chairman, State Senator John Harms of Scottsbluff’s led the study.
