Tips for Hosting Thanksgiving

As we age, it is important to consider any limitations that our bodies may have—especially during colder months. When planning a Thanksgiving meal as an older adult or that will be attended by an older adult, there are a few factors to consider.

In regard to the meal, there are a few things to remember. The food needs to be easily digestible. This can be accomplished by preparing a variety of side dishes that can be easily consumed by making them easily chewable, less salty, and less spicy. Keeping meals healthy is also important for older adults. Due to decreased appetites, elders require more nutrition at meals. Preparing a few special dishes for the older adults, if time allows, is a considerate gesture.

Planning the setting of the event requires thought and planning as well. Because the elderly often have many particular needs, their mobility is often limited, especially if they are wheelchair bound. Making sure furniture is not in the way is important to ensure the safety of the guests. Providing them with their own chair or limiting time on their feet is another way to make seniors more comfortable.

Thanksgiving can be challenging for the mental and emotional health of some seniors. Loneliness and depression are genuine concerns, but these can be combated by finding ways to engage seniors in the festivities. This can be done by playing their preferred music or including them in games that can be enjoyed with the children.

Lastly, the holidays can have a detrimental impact on the seniors’ sleep schedules. This change can be remedied by addressing certain senior sleep problems. If the elderly relative is staying with you, make sure they know where you are sleeping in case they have any issues that arise. It may also be helpful to ask them if there is anything you can do to make them more comfortable.

Even the slightest modifications can assist an elderly loved one at a holiday celebration. Just like everyone else, they deserve to be happy, comfortable, and included in holiday festivities.
